Going Green
By: Charles Onorevole

Today all of us have a real concern about the future of our environment. We are trying to make sure the world we hand down to our children is not polluted and toxic. In 1990 the USA began a nationwide recycling effort to eliminate aluminum, glass and steel from filling our landfills. In fact we are doing a great job, millions of tons are recycled daily; but more can be done.

The State of New Jersey has recently passed legislation to fine each county which does not recycle properly. However, few county residents realize these fines impact them directly. The EPA levies monthly fines to each of the 21 counties in New Jersey . Based on population and trash collected, the state has a formula to penalize us and these penalties get passed on to our county tax bill. The bottom line is we pay more in fines to the EPA because residents don't separate and recycle everything they can.

So, compost, recycle and sort out all that you can to help save money and save our environment.

Advanced Builders is aware of our local quality of life and we use a Grinnell dumpster service. They cart off trash from our job sites and send the containers to Sparta where they separate concrete, steel, wood and stumps. Then just the trash gets dumped to the transfer station. Moreover, our employees separate copper, aluminum, cast iron and cardboard before it even enters the dumpster.

Green building is something Advanced Builders takes very seriously. For example, the lumber we use on our many projects comes from (FSC) Forest Stewardship Council or (SFI) Sustainable Forestry Initiative. We do this for a couple of reasons; they do not clear cut and have a strong tradition of managing the forest and cutting them properly, "The Green Way". Furthermore, we always install Energy Star windows and doors. We have also been installing quality composite decks for more that 15 years; since the inception of Trex.

Here are some real good ideas to shoot for: reduce electricity by turning off lights and computers, do not let you car idol, take advantage of curb side recycling, compost used kitchen waste like eggshells and banana peels, reduce water usage around the home and purchase locally grown produce. Purchase paints and carpet with low VOC's.

We can also install brand new beautiful triple pane Low E argon filled maintenance free vinyl windows in your home. They actually have a U-factor of .11 and an R value over 8!!! Solar heat gain coefficient of .33... What does all this mean to you.

It simply means when it's bitter cold and blustery wind and snowy you will be extremely comfortable in your home with the windows only Advanced Builders can install for you. or

When the summer temperatures reach 99 and 102 they will work extra hard to keep your home cool, saving you money!!!

These windows also exceed the federal stimulus tax credit criteria, which makes you eligible for a $1,500 tax credit. We will also take off $1,000. on any job over $5,000. (exp. 4-15-10).
